BLOCKCHAIN â JUST ANOTHER IT IMPLEMENTATION? A COMPARISON OF BLOCKCHAIN AND INTERORGANIZATIONAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS
In expectation of an impending technological disruption, organizations get familiar with blockchain technology and scout for first value delivering implementations. So far, the promises and expectations fall short and large scale blockchain applications and ecosystems, apart from cryptocurrencies, are still missing. One aspect that contributes to this shortcoming is that blockchain projects face a multitude of implementation barriers, which have not yet been systematically identified. Blockchain can serve as a technological fabric, connecting different parties in a business network and facilitating information exchange. Such systems show clear resemblance to interorganizational information systems (IOIS). Therefore, the questions can be raised to what extent blockchain systems face the same implementation barriers as compared to any other IOIS implementation and, thus, if IOIS literature can be a valuable source for overcoming these barriers? To investigate these questions, we conduct a series of interviews with experts that have implemented blockchain prototypes in an interorganizational context and compare the derived barriers with the results of a structured literature review on challenges of IOIS implementations. We identify technical, organizational and network challenges that emerge along the blockchain implementation process and illustrate how the development of blockchain-based systems extends the existing knowledge on IOIS
Capturing Value from Data: Revenue Models for Data-Driven Services
Undisputedly, the amount of data is growing exponentially and huge opportunities exist to exploit them. New service business models are being built around value propositions based on data and analytics. Suitable revenue models need to reap the benefits of these value propositions. However, the question of how to best turn a value proposition into revenue for data-driven services is not systematically addressed in literature. \ \ We provide an overview of possible revenue models for data-driven services. Based on a sample of 100 start-ups, we apply qualitative analysis to identify different revenue models for newly established data-driven services such as subscription, gain sharing and multi-sided revenue models. \ \ This paper will contribute to the fundamental understanding of how companies can capture value from data-driven services. It should give guidance on the design and selection of appropriate revenue models and, thus, inspire new forms of revenue generation from the use of data.
Capturing Value from Data: Exploring Factors Influencing Revenue Model Design for Data-Driven Services
In recent years organizations have started utilizing big data and advanced analytics not just to support decision-making to raise process efficiencies, but also to engage in new data-driven services. These data-driven services complement the current product and service portfolio and create additional value for customers. In order to capture the value created, organizations need to design sustainable revenue models consisting of a revenue(how) and pricing (how much) mechanism. In order to develop a deeper understanding of one part of the decision-making process on revenue models, we apply a qualitative study and analyze the results through the lens of rational choice theory. Based on the interviews, we derived four factors â service characteristics, provider interests, customer interests, and market factors -influencing the design. By this, we contribute to the general understanding of the design of revenue models and enable further investigation into this field of research
HOW TO CULTIVATE ANALYTICS CAPABILITIES WITHIN AN ORGANIZATION? â DESIGN AND TYPES OF ANALYTICS COMPETENCY CENTERS
Today, the ability to exploit big data using advanced analytics bears considerable potential to create competitive advantages. Therefore, business leaders need to make crucial design decisions on how to cultivate these capabilities within their organization. Analytics Competency Centers (ACCs) are an important organizational solution to spread analytics capabilities by providing leadership, expertise and infrastructure. In this paper, we analyze nine analytics competency centers of major global players across several industries - based on a series of interviews with executives, consultants and data scientists. We identify strategic and structural design options, common processes, best-practices, and potential future development paths. In particular, we distinguish between two generic types of centers that differ in their strategic orientation and their choice of design options. Our work contributes to organizational design theory addressing the question on how analytics capabilities can be nurtured for competitive advantage. It should provide concrete guidance to business leaders on how to design and apply ACCs as an organizational option

UNDERSTANDING THE ANATOMY OF ANALYTICS-BASED SERVICES â A TAXONOMY TO CONCEPTUALIZE THE USE OF DATA AND ANALYTICS IN SERVICES
The abundance of data accompanied by advances in analytics technologies increasingly drive companies to introduce analytics-based services, i.e. customer-facing services in which data and analytics help customers make decisions. Despite its growing application in practice, theoretical and conceptual work on analytics-based services is still scarce. In this paper, we develop a taxonomy of analytics-based services unveiling their conceptually grounded and empirically validated characteristics. Applying an established taxonomy building method, we draw upon an analysis of 85 use cases of analytics-based services. The results of an expert evaluation indicate both the usefulness and robustness of our taxonomy. The developed taxonomy of analytics-based services contributes in two ways: First, we add to the descriptive knowledge on this new service type, establish a common language among researchers and equip them with the means to analyze analytics-based services in a structured manner â thus laying the foundation for a deeper theorizing process in the future. Second, we provide a concrete conceptualization of analytics-based services for practitioners for initial guidance in new service development
